Shell has recently released its first progress report on energy transition, after the implementation of its Powering Progress strategy in 2021.

During the Capital Markets Day event in June 2023, Shell emphasized how its strategy is designed to generate more value while producing fewer emissions, with a particular emphasis on the “more value” aspect.

This energy transition update focuses on how the strategy effectively delivers “fewer emissions.”

Shell aims to achieve net-zero emissions across all operations and energy products by 2050, which marks a significant shift for the business.

The company is confident that this commitment aligns with the ambitious objectives of the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Shell’s approach advocates for a balanced and orderly transition from fossil fuels to low-carbon energy solutions, ensuring that energy remains secure and affordable.

According to Wael Sawan, Shell’s CEO, “Energy has significantly contributed to human progress, enabling many worldwide to lead more prosperous lives. “In 2023, we met our objective to lower the net carbon intensity of the energy products we offer, achieving a 6.3% reduction from 2016 levels – marking the third year in a row we’ve reached our goal,” Sawan observed. “To further the decarbonization of the transport sector, we’ve set a new goal to reduce emissions from the use of our oil products by 15-20% by 2030, in comparison to 2021 divs.

He exclaimed that “We are expanding our power business, including renewable energy ventures, in regions such as Australia, Europe, India, and the USA, and have ceased direct energy supply to residential homes in Europe.”

The Ministry of Water and Irrigation has signed an agreement for the Deir Alla and Karameh water networks rehabilitation project in Balqa. 

The sixth phase of this project aims to drill 16 wells in the Abu Zyghan area, with a value of 97.24 million euros. 

The funding for this project comes from a loan provided by the European Investment Bank (EIB) as well as self-finance, while the studies, design, and supervision aspects were secured through a grant from USAID. 

The project’s goal is to improve the water supply across 17 areas in Deir Alla and Karameh districts through seven different packages. 

By adopting natural flow pumping techniques, the scheme aims to extend the operational longevity of water networks, enhance service efficiency, and promote equitable water distribution. 

Minister of Water and Irrigation Raed Abul Saud emphasized the ministry’s dedication to speeding up the deployment of these new networks to deal with the increasing pressures of demand. 

He also reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to addressing the challenges posed by surging water demand across the Kingdom. 

The drilling of the 16 wells in Abu Zayghan, costing $13.550 million, includes an exploratory well designed to bolster water availability in Deir Alla and Karameh. 

Expressing gratitude for the international support received, the minister referred to the role of the European Union, particularly the EIB and USAID, in facilitating the financial funds necessary to implement projects to face challenges of the water sector in light of increasing demand.

The Deputy Premier was briefed on the production process in the company’s factory, which specializes in the production of white and compact fused alumina and exports to more than 25 countries.

He emphasized the private sector’s role in enhancing environmental security and its efforts to reduce carbon emissions by 30 percent by 2035 and reach carbon neutrality by 2060, in line with the goals of the comprehensive development process led by His Majesty King Hamad and overseen by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, and Prime Minister.

Shaikh Khalid affirmed that the private sector is keen on countering environmental challenges and sustaining the environment and resources in line with the Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 and the Government Plan (2023-2026) by focusing on energy sustainability, transitioning to it, and encouraging the national mix to be more renewable.

These efforts are guided by the National Renewable Energy Action Plan (NREAP) and the National Energy Efficiency Action Plan (NEEAP), which are two of the main priorities overseen by the ministerial committee for development and infrastructure projects, Shaikh Khalid added.

The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the diversity of Bahrain’s industrial sector and efforts to direct capital into specific and advanced industries to achieve the Government’s Industrial Sector Strategy (2022-2026), which focuses on applying circular economy and environmental and social governance to raise the industrial sector’s contribution to the GDP, increase exports of national origin, and create new jobs.

Shaikh Khalid commended the partnership between Al Zayani Investments and Imerys, a French multinational company that specializes in the production and processing of industrial minerals.

He noted that their partnership was the result of the efforts of the Economic Development Board of Bahrain in promoting the kingdom’s role as a business-friendly environment and providing investment opportunities.

Mr Al Zayani said that with the installation of 8,600 solar panels, carbon emissions would be significantly reduced by 5,000 tonnes annually, which make up 15 percent of the company’s emissions.

The panels will also generate 25 percent of the company’s electricity consumption, he added.

Saudi authorities have announced that the Principality of Eastern Region has signed an agreement with one of the subsidiaries of the Saudi sovereign wealth fund PIF to develop a project called THE RIG.

The investment agreement includes the construction, development, operation, and maintenance of a tourist and visitor station, a marina for yachts and seaplanes, helipads, and other supporting activities to serve the project.

The deal was signed in the presence of Governor of the Eastern Region, Prince Saud bin Naif bin Abdulaziz, at a ceremony in Dammam.

The project aims to invest in marine activities and develop unique tourism and entertainment destinations.

This announcement follows the launch of a package of investment projects worth SAR18 billion ($4.8 billion) by Prince Saud.

THE RIG will include several key projects such as hotels, amusement parks, water sports facilities, as well as other adventures and stations with facilities to serve visitors and tourists.

The platform will also feature three hotels and eleven restaurants. It is considered the first tourist destination in the world inspired by offshore oil platforms in the Arabian Gulf, making it unique on a global scale.

According to officials, the project includes an offshore platform in the middle of the Arabian Gulf and stations on Dammam Corniche, the Cultural Center, and Jubail Corniche.

The main project is a platform in the middle of the Arabian Gulf near Al Juraid Island. The project aims to represent a leap in entertainment, tourism, marine activities, and means of transportation, supporting elements of quality of life.

A new report by consulting firm Oliver Wyman reveals that the commercial aviation fleet is expected to grow by 28% in the next decade, from 28,400 to 36,400 aircraft by 2034.

The Middle East region will see an even more significant increase of 51% from 1,472 to 2,227 planes.

However, COVID-19 has had a lasting impact on the industry, wiping out six years of growth, and the fleet is expected to reach 39,000 planes by 2036.

According to Anthony DiNota, Vice President of Oliver Wyman’s CAVOK, the industry is finally out of recovery mode and on a growth trajectory.

The report also suggests that the Middle East will gain a larger share of the global fleet, due to factors such as its central location, strong established players in the market, and the addition of new players.

The region’s economic diversification plans will also play a significant role in fueling the growth of the aviation industry.

The report further predicts that the maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) sector will grow by almost 3% in 2024, reaching $104 billion.

It is expected to expand by an average of 1.8% annually The forecast has revealed some key findings regarding the aviation industry worldwide.

Firstly, the industry has now matched its pre-COVID peak globally, but growth moving forward will be slower.

The fleet is expected to expand at a rate of 2.5% annually, compared to the 2.9% projected in the previous forecast.

Narrowbodies will see a steady increase in their share of the fleet, rising from 61% in 2024 to 63% in 2034. The growth is driven by the resurgence of domestic air travel worldwide, which is projected to surpass the pre-COVID peak.

Secondly, the Middle East fleet is projected to grow at an annual rate of 4.2% from 2024 to 2034, outstripping growth rates in most parts of the world, including Africa (2.3%), Latin America (1.9%), North America (1.8%), and Western Europe (1.0%). Narrowbodies will be the primary driver of this growth.

In this region, narrowbodies will climb from 40% to 47% of the fleet over the decade, while widebodies will decrease from 56% to 50%.

Thirdly, India will overtake China as the industry’s growth leader for the first time ever, with the Indian fleet expected to expand almost 13% over the first five years of the forecast period and nearly 10% for the entire 10 years. Currently at about 600 planes, the Indian fleet will be 2.5 times the size it is today by 2034.

Lastly, the aviation’s global aftermarket, known as MRO, keeps aircraft flying. The overall MRO market in the Middle East is expected to grow at an annual rate of 2.3% (vs. 1.8% globally) from 2023 to 2034 and will be driven by local capabilities development to capture value leakage. Dubai Municipality has launched a new project as part of its efforts to enhance the city’s greenery. The project is focused on the intersection of Al Meydan and Al Khail Streets, which is at the center of Dubai. 

Covering an area of 302,266 square meters, this project demonstrates the Municipality’s commitment to expanding green spaces in the city and implementing beautification projects that improve its overall appearance.  

The project features advanced technologies employed by the Municipality to implement sustainable irrigation systems and water drainage. 

These systems include fully automated irrigation mechanisms that eliminate the need for human intervention. Furthermore, wind-resistant spraying techniques have been integrated, resulting in a water-saving of around 30%. 

The Municipality has implemented effective sustainable groundwater and rainwater drainage systems, especially during the recent rainfall. 

They have established a pumping station that can handle over 280 cubic meters per hour and a tank with a capacity of 1,000 cubic meters. To enhance the area’s beauty, the Municipality has installed multi-color linear lighting systems at the intersection.  

According to H.E. Al Hajri, the Municipality prioritizes the development of agricultural beautification projects. Their primary goal is to improve the vitality of Dubai with integrated world-class standards. They aim to foster sustainability in Dubai by implementing innovative irrigation technologies that rely on fully recycled water.  

Furthermore, the Municipality will plant ‘Chorisia’ trees (Chorisia Speciosa) at the intersection of Al Meydan and Al Khail Roads for the first time. This tree, which belongs to the mallow family, has a broad, swollen stem that serves as a water reservoir. It also has large pink-red flowers.

The Ministry of Industry and Mineral Resources reported a 10 percent increase in industrial body units in Saudi Arabia, rising to 11,549 in 2023.

Jarrah bin Mohammed Al-Jarrah, spokesman for the Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources stated:

As per the statement by the spokesperson of the ministry, 11,549 factories have received new licenses for 25 industrial activities.

The total estimated investment in these activities is SAR1.541 trillion (USD 399 billion).

The top four activities that received licenses are food products manufacturing, non-metallic mineral products manufacturing, formed metal products manufacturing, and rubber and plastic products manufacturing.

The highest number of industrial licenses totaling 1,043 were issued to National establishments.

Ever since the discovery of oil, in 1966 the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum began the development of the Emirate of Dubai.

Dubai gained its independence in 1971, forming the United Arab Emirates with Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Umm Al Quwain and Fujairah and adopting the Dirham as its currency two years later.

In 2001, the construction of the palm Jumeirah began, which is a cluster of artificial islands on the Persian Gulf’s shore in the UAE.

The islands have an estimated population of 10,000 as of 2017 and extend Dubai’s total shoreline by 520 km.

To diversify the economy away from Oil exportation, the Downtown Dubai project started, which is a large-scale complex in the heart of Dubai, with Burj Khalifa in the center of it.
