The Emergence of Green Energy in the Middle East

The Middle East, traditionally known for its vast oil reserves and as a global energy powerhouse, is increasingly turning towards renewable energy sources.

This shift is driven by the need to address global warming, diversify energy sources, and prepare for a post-oil era. Countries across the region are investing in solar, wind, and other renewable technologies, leveraging their abundant natural resources for sustainable energy production.

Strategies for Overcoming Oil Dependency

Governments are formulating strategic plans to reduce the heavy reliance on oil exports that has characterized the region’s economies for decades.

These strategies include substantial investment in renewable energy infrastructure, regulatory reforms to encourage sustainable practices, and economic diversification efforts aimed at creating new industries and jobs unrelated to fossil fuels.

Major Renewable Energy Initiatives and Their Impact

Several landmark projects highlight the Middle East’s commitment to renewable energy. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park in the UAE and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 renewable energy targets exemplify major initiatives. These are not only reducing carbon footprints but also, over time, altering the geographic landscape of global energy influence.

The Economic Benefits of Adopting Renewable Energy

The pivot towards green energy is expected to yield significant economic benefits. By diversifying energy sources, Middle Eastern countries can stabilize their economies against oil price volatility. Renewable energy projects also stimulate job creation in new sectors, from technology and engineering to project management and fieldwork.

Barriers to Renewable Energy Adoption

Despite the clear benefits, the transition faces obstacles. These include the high initial costs of renewable energy projects, infrastructural challenges, and the need for regulatory and market reforms. Further, the entrenched interests of the fossil fuel industry pose a significant barrier to change.

The Role of International Cooperation in Energy Transition

International partnerships are pivotal for the Middle East’s energy transition. Knowledge exchange, financial investment, and technology transfer from countries with advanced renewable energy capabilities can accelerate regional projects. Multinational agreements on climate change further encourage nations to commit to sustainable energy paths.

Sustainability Goals and Renewable Energy Targets

Many Middle Eastern countries have set ambitious renewable energy targets as part of their sustainability goals. These targets are central to national strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and promoting environmental stewardship while ensuring energy security and economic growth.

Advancements in Renewable Energy Storage Solutions

Innovations in energy storage are critical to overcoming the intermittency of renewable energy sources. Advancements in battery technology and other storage methods enable the efficient capture and dispatch of solar and wind energy, ensuring a consistent and reliable power supply.

An investment of $10-15bn between 2023 and 2025 in low-carbon energy solutions was made by the company.

Shell surpassed 60% of its objective to cut emissions from its operations in half by 2030.

Shell has recently released its first progress report on energy transition, after the implementation of its Powering Progress strategy in 2021.

During the Capital Markets Day event in June 2023, Shell emphasized how its strategy is designed to generate more value while producing fewer emissions, with a particular emphasis on the “more value” aspect.

This energy transition update focuses on how the strategy effectively delivers “fewer emissions.”

Shell aims to achieve net-zero emissions across all operations and energy products by 2050, which marks a significant shift for the business.

The company is confident that this commitment aligns with the ambitious objectives of the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

Shell’s approach advocates for a balanced and orderly transition from fossil fuels to low-carbon energy solutions, ensuring that energy remains secure and affordable.

According to Wael Sawan, Shell’s CEO, “Energy has significantly contributed to human progress, enabling many worldwide to lead more prosperous lives. Currently, the global community faces the dual challenge of meeting increased energy demands while addressing the pressing issue of climate change. The swift advancements in energy transition observed in recent years across various countries and technologies bolster my firm belief in our strategic direction.”

Sawan further remarked, “Our investment of $10-15bn between 2023 and 2025 in low-carbon energy solutions positions us as a major player in the energy transition.

“Moreover, in 2023, our expenditure on low-carbon solutions reached $5.6bn, accounting for over 23% of our total capital investment” He added.

Shell’s investments in emerging technologies, including electric vehicle charging infrastructure, biofuels, renewable energy, hydrogen, and carbon capture and storage, are instrumental in reducing emissions for both Shell and its customers.

More on Shell:

The company aims to scale these technologies to ensure they become an economical option for consumers.

Shell’s advocacy efforts are now focused on pivotal areas deemed essential for the energy transition, such as supporting policies that align with national net-zero goals, including carbon pricing, providing the secure energy supply the world requires, influencing demand shifts, and expanding low-carbon solutions.

In 2023, Shell surpassed 60% of its objective to cut emissions from its operations in half by 2030, relative to its 2016 levels.

This exceeds the commitments made by the signatories of the Oil and Gas Decarbonization Charter established at COP28.

Shell was among the pioneers in setting a goal for near-zero methane emissions by 2030.

In 2023, the company attained a methane emissions intensity of just 0.05%, well below its target of 0.2%. Additionally, Shell contributed to the World Bank’s Global Flaring and Methane Reduction Fund in 2023, further endorsing collective efforts to minimize methane emissions and flaring.

“In 2023, we met our objective to lower the net carbon intensity of the energy products we offer, achieving a 6.3% reduction from 2016 levels – marking the third year in a row we’ve reached our goal,” Sawan observed. “To further the decarbonization of the transport sector, we’ve set a new goal to reduce emissions from the use of our oil products by 15-20% by 2030, in comparison to 2021 divs.

He exclaimed that “We are expanding our power business, including renewable energy ventures, in regions such as Australia, Europe, India, and the USA, and have ceased direct energy supply to residential homes in Europe.”

The Value of Saudi Aramco stake that was transferred to the PIF was estimated to be around $163.6 billion, 8% of the company.

Saudi Aramco, based in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, is the world’s largest oil producer. The company is primarily state-owned and has been officially named the Saudi Arabian Oil Company

According to the Sovereign Wealth Fund Institute, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) of Saudi Arabia has seen a significant increase in its total assets, reaching $940.26 billion after a surge of $163.6 billion.

This growth can be attributed to Saudi Arabia’s decision to transfer an 8% stake in oil giant Aramco to the portfolio companies of the PIF. As a result, the PIF has risen to become the fifth-largest Sovereign Wealth Fund worldwide.

The value of the stake transferred was estimated at $163.6 billion based on Aramco’s market capitalization, according to LSEG data.

The PIF directly owns a 4% stake in Aramco, which was transferred in 2022, and an additional 4% indirectly, which was transferred last year to its wholly owned unit Sanabil Investments.

The four largest Sovereign Wealth Funds globally are the Norway Government Pension Fund Global ($1.65 trillion), China Investment Corporation ($1.35 trillion), SAFE Investment Company ($1.09 trillion), and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority ($993 billion).

Following this latest transfer, the state now holds an 82.186% stake in Aramco.

About Saudi Aramco outside of the PIF transfer:

Saudi Aramco, based in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia, is the world’s largest oil producer. The company is primarily state-owned and has been officially named the Saudi Arabian Oil Company. It is considered the world’s most profitable company, surpassing even tech giants such as Apple (AAPL) and Alphabet’s Google (GOOGL).

In 1933, the Saudi Arabian government and the Standard Oil Company of California signed a concession agreement, which led to the establishment of Saudi Aramco. The company started drilling operations soon after and began commercial oil production in 1938.

PIF invested $31.5 billion last year, making it the world’s top spending sovereign wealth fund.

Saudi Arabia has recently increased its stake in oil giant Aramco by transferring an 8% stake to the Public Investment Fund.

With this move, the PIF’s direct and indirect holding in Aramco has doubled, which is a part of the kingdom’s plan to reduce its reliance on oil and diversify its economy.

According to LSEG data, this stake is worth around $163.6 billion based on Aramco’s current market capitalization.

The PIF already owned a 4% stake in Aramco, which was directly transferred in 2022, and another 4% indirectly transferred to Sanabil, which is wholly owned by PIF.

Reuters had previously reported that Saudi Arabia is planning to sell more shares of Aramco, which will help finance the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 program. Aramco raised a record $29.4 billion from its initial public offering before the pandemic.

The PIF declined to comment on which entities the shares would be transferred to. However, the transfer is in line with Saudi Arabia’s long-term initiatives to diversify the national economy, expand investment opportunities, and boost the country’s economy.

More on Saudi Aramco:

According to the state news agency SPA, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who chairs PIF, stated that “the transfer will also solidify PIF’s strong financial position and credit rating.”

PIF is the centerpiece of the de facto ruler’s ambitious plan to diversify the economy by building “giga projects” and new industries.

It has transformed from a sleepy sovereign investor into a global investment vehicle that makes multi-billion-dollar bets on various sectors such as technology and sports.

PIF invested $31.5 billion last year, making it the world’s top spending sovereign wealth fund. Before the new transfer, it had roughly $700 billion in assets under management.

Electricity inducing majdool dates are being tested as a concept to extract clean green energy.

The process includes the extraction of natural sugar from the majdool dates, with copper plates creating a circuit, allowing an energy flow.

The team of 3 Emaratis aims to introduce a new waypoint of Arab culture though dates, which have had a significant role for thousands of years and they aim to make it more relevant for the future to come.

Majdool dates are bigger and can hold copper plates more easily, which is why they were the brand of choosing for this project.

A team of Emirati engineers and artists have developed a unique way to generate electricity by reimagining the traditional date fruit.

The fruit, known for its nutritional richness, has been transformed into a source of renewable power by extracting energy from its natural sugars.

At the Sikka Art and Design Festival, the team showcased their invention made with Majdool dates that can hold copper plates firmly.

The plates act as electrodes and are interconnected by a conductive metal wire, which completes the circuit, allowing the setup to generate a small amount of electricity.

The team used 20 dates for the model, creating a visually striking display. They believe that their project draws attention to the cultural significance of dates and emphasizes their value in Emirati traditions.

Dates have been an integral part of the Emirati culture for centuries, and this project aims to showcase their versatility and innovative use of dates.

The team hopes that by presenting their Electricity inducing project at the festival, they can raise awareness of the cultural significance of dates and promote sustainable energy solutions.

The installation not only generates electricity but also serves as a conversation starter about the importance of preserving cultural heritage and sustainable practices.

Gas Field discovery was announced by Saudi Aramco on Sunday, February 25th with a capacity of nearly 15 trillion cubic feet.

According to the paper, it could turn Saudi Arabia into the world’s third-biggest gas producer and exporter within the upcoming years.

Condensates increased by two billion barrels to a total of 75 billion barrels in the field, nearly 17,000 square kilometers, the size of Kuwait.

information about Gas field:

According to a former adviser at the Saudi Oil Ministry, a significant discovery at one of Saudi Arabia’s largest gas fields is expected to boost the country’s revenues and transform it into a major gas exporter.

Oil company Saudi Aramco recently announced that it has increased its estimates of gas deposits in the Jafurah field in Eastern Saudi Arabia by almost 15 trillion cubic feet (tcf) to a total of nearly 229 trillion tcf.

Additionally, it reported an increase in condensates by almost two billion barrels to a total of 75 billion barrels at the field, which covers an area of nearly 17,000 sq km.

The discovery will help Saudi Arabia diversify its sources of income and energy, according to Mohammed Al-Sabban, a former adviser at the Oil Ministry.

He explained that this increase would allow the country to start exporting gas instead of consuming most of the production in local petrochemical units and other facilities.

Another well-known Saudi energy expert quoted by a Saudi Arabic language daily Asharq Alawsat suggested that the new addition could turn Saudi Arabia into the world’s third-largest gas producer within a few years.

He added that it would also support Saudi Arabia’s position as a pioneer in the global energy industry and turn Aramco into the largest integrated energy and petrochemicals company in the world.

Currently the highest producers of gas are the United States, Russia, Iran and Canada.
