The Hydrogen power plant that Iraq’s Minister of oil is building is to produce 800 tons of green energy annually.

He stated that the Ministry of oil has prepared a draft for renewable energy law and is already waiting for approval by the parliament.

Iraq is also planning to build a 130-megawatt solar power plant in south Iraq in addition to the Hydrogen plant.

Hayan Abdel Ghani, Iraq’s oil minister said that Iraq is planning to build its first green Hydrogen plant with a production capacity of 800 tons per year, “as part of a post war strategy to gradually switch to renewable energy” he added.

During his participation in the ninth Iraq International Energy Exhibition and Conference (IEE), Abdul-Ghani said that the government has begun the first tender to implement carbon conservation projects to reduce gas flaring in Baghdad’s eastern field, which has a capacity of 12 million cubic feet.

He also said in an energy conference in Baghdad on Monday that the project is planned to be set up in south Iraq and it includes a 130-megawatts solar power plant in addition to the hydrogen plant.

“The Oil Ministry has started taking steps to build a green hydrogen plant to be owned by the South Refineries Company,” he informed Iraqi publications.

The oil minister stated that his Ministry has prepared a draft for renewable energy law and sent it to the Iraqi parliament for approval.

Green hydrogen is created by electrolyzing water molecules to separate them into hydrogen and oxygen using renewable energy sources like solar or wind power, has a large potential for production in Iraq.

The country is rich in renewable energy resources especially solar and wind energy, projects may be developed due to the windy and solar filled region, current plans are being set to secure Iraq to be more dependent on green energy.

The Development Road has multiple phases, completing the Grand Al-Faw port, building the mega-rail, and extending the rail through Türkiye.

The project is expected to be completed by 2029.

Iraq has approved the development of The Development Road; a 2,700-kilometer Mega-Rail will be built to reach and link the Middle East with Europe.

Connecting south Iraq with Türkiye with the confirmation that the Turkish government in Ankara after a visit by the Iraqi Transport Minister Razzak Al-Saadawi will set in plans in collaboration with Iraq to extend the rail within Türkiye to reach the Bulgarian border.

The project comprises a rail line and a motorway for passengers as well as a freight for transporting goods throughout the rail.

The project by connecting the Grand Faw Port in Iraq with Turkey plans to turn the country into a trading transit hub by offering an alternative way to transport goods between Asia and Europe, aiming to rival the Suez Canal.

The Development Road would also serve as an upgrade to Iraq’s current outdated goods transport network.

Director General of the General Company for Ports of Iraq, Farhan al-Fartousi, said that the project is expected to be completed in 2029.

He also stated that “Even if Iraq was absent for a year or two or a decade or two, it must return one day or another. Hopefully these days are the beginning of the return of Iraq”.

The Grand Al-Faw Port is currently undergoing construction and Phase 1 is expected to be completed by 2025. It is the first step and phase of The Development Road, followed by construction of the Rail connecting Iraq to Türkiye, followed by the expansion of the rail throughout Türkiye, effectively linking Asia with Europe, hoping to rival the Suez Canal.

A new project between China and Iraq has been awarded to create 300,000 housing units on the outskirts of Baghdad.

Baghdad the capital of Iraq and Beijing the capital of China have previously signed a 20-year contract to develop Iraq and give a continuous supply of crude oil to China.

The new Silk Road is what China aims to create to increase the stability of parts of the Asian continent and links the continent together economically.

The Iraqi government, led by Prime Minister Mohammad Shia Al-Sudani is aiming to build about 300,000 housing units in the outer parts of Baghdad, it will also include hospitals, schools, universities and commercial centers.

The process will be handled by the East China Engineering Science and Technology Company, China National Chemical Engineering Company and Shams Al-Binaa after they were partnered for the $2 billion project on the 29th of December.

In 2019, Baghdad and Beijing signed a contract for 20 years to supply the Chinese firms with 100,00 barrels per day of Iraqi crude oil, while China would handle development projects in Iraq with the revenue.

Since the contract was signed, China has built 1,000 schools, installed power plants, developed city airports and several other projects.

China is attempting to maintain stability in West Asia, to secure the future energy market for Beijing and the shipment of manufactured goods.

Contracts to build 4 more cities and 10 more contracts will be revealed in the year 2024, all to be completed after 4 to 5 years of their starting date.

This is all increasing China’s investment in the Middle East and South Asia in part of their Belt and Road (BRI) Plan that was announced in 2013 (the New Silk Road) which is a trans-continental passage that links Beijing with southeast Asia, south Asia, central Asia, Russia and Europe by land, which has a targeted completion date of 2049.

The BRI has helped lift nearly 40 million people out of poverty and continued to improve the living location and income of people affected.
